After 41 Royal Marine Commando had cleared the Normandy beaches they faced a long overland campaign to reach the German border. For the lightly equipped commandos, communication with air, artillery and armored support was vital. The commandos developed an elite force of motorcycle dispatch riders as part of this effort. The British formed the northern flank of the Allied advance. The dusty roads of France and Belgium were eventually replaced by a Dutch countryside flooded by German sabotage. 41 RM Commando became involved in the amphibious landing at Walcheren during the advance on Antwerp, one of the most tactically interesting campaigns of the war. Raymond Mitchell's vivid memoirs of life and war on the road will be of interest to both military and motorcycling enthusiasts.
